PCIe Bifurcation Frustration with Icy Dock ToughArmor NVMe and 3 PCs
In this video I try to test out the Icy Dock ToughArmor M.2 NVMe Mobile Rack for PCIe slots. It supports 2 removable NVMe drives placed in the included sleds, and (almost) fits an x8 or x16 lane PCIe slot that supports bifurcation to get 4 juicy lanes to each of the SSDs. I test it out with Samsung 990 Pro and Western Digital SN850X 4TB drives.
That being said, it turns out that not all bifurcation implementations are created equal, nor are all PCIe slots. Hence the frustrating aspect. Buy it with a generous return policy in place, if you buy it at all.
Just to be 100% clear: This is not sponsored in any way. If you couldn't tell from the length of the video and the conclusion. But anyways,...

    Yes the EMI filter is not very special but if you look at the used materials and time it takes to produce something like this, it is a fair price. Because their is a lot of manual labor involved to assemble it. On most equipment this filter won't do much, but it does filter HF so I would not call it snake oil. I have seen similar filters in products that costs thousands, now then we are talking about unfair prices 🫤

    Allmax actually asked if they could use excerpts from this video in some promotional posts on social media. I said yes. Full disclosure: I didn't take any sort of payment from them. Not so much as a free battery. Nada. And I think I said in the video, but I paid for all those batteries myself. So if you see this video being used by the company, it's totally cool with me as they should be happy with these results. But this test and any upcoming ones (annnd there will be another shortly) are completely independent, NOT sponsored, and I could care less in advance who wins. So fwiw my results are as objective and accurate as they can be. I don't even have monetization enabled on RUclips, so I technically lose money on these things. They do satisfy my own curiosity, though... as well as yours, I hope!

    Since you are serious about your backups and already have a capable server, then I would definitely split the array at the cost of usable space. Used system, used drives - it's not that hard to have an error on the array and every time it happens it will resilver or scrub. On ZFS maybe 2 RAIDZ2 vdevs or 4 RAIDZ1?

    The sad fact is very few consumer/prosumer boards even support bifurcation because of the limited PCIE lanes consumer CPU's offer. Even worse is most of the ones that do only support it on the X16 slot. I ended up rebuilding one of my machines with an Epyc CPU/mobo for both the PCIE lanes and the painless bifurcation support so I feel your pain with something that on the surface seems like it should be simple.

    I remember my first attempt to make a server out of prosumer hardware. Back then, I had at least 5 Firewire drives, and 5 PCI slots to work with. I did it with the PowerMac G3, and ran into a problem where I ran out of connections I could make to the System on OSX 10.3. Found a work around that would allow me via the terminal to get more than 10 connections, but later changed over to the Dell PC I bought. The things I did to hook up 32 drives to the thing was miraculous in that small case. A Combination of Multiple Combo cards, (Firewire, Ide, USB 2.0, & Internal and external Sata ports) along with more USB 2.0 cards filling up the rest and IDE and a dedicated SATA card. What scared everyone is the amount of wall warts I had daisy chained with those stupid extension cords for the external drives. The crazy thing is? I only have had 2 disk failures out of those drives after all these years. In fact the ACOM Data Drives, the only thing that has been a problem is the rubber on the drives starting to get gummy. Other then that, there was a power brick that failed, but thats it over nearly 12 years of constant on time. Even more shocking was I has an Uptime of over 2 years on that old machine before I noticed the capacitors bulging on the motherboard, so replaced the board, and upgraded the CPU and RAM. Today? It needs some new caps again. Only reason why I took it out of service a long time ago. Today? Everything fits on One 23TB harddrive I had on all those drives. And a FRACTION of the power as well.

    Unfortunately? Why is unfortunate that this system has a ThreadRipper Pro? Our marketing team uses these machines for rendering, previously they used a PC workstation, a render now on their ThreadRipper Pro is done in 4 ~ 5 faster than the intel.

  • @davidlucavish7948
    @davidlucavish7948 24 дня назад

    You have to look at the capability of the CPU and the Chipset of the motherboard. Alot of motherboards have two 16 lane slots but only support one 16 lane and one 8 lanes electrically. AMD or Intel processors and chipsets both have limitations depending on model. I ran into the same problem with SAS raid controllers...

    Pcie lane configuration on Amd/Intel consumer motherboards are dependent on the cpu lack of pcie lanes. Most of the consumer cpus just have 16+4 or 16+8 lanes. You need to find a block diagram showing how the motherboard manufacturer has allocated the lanes to figure out what happens when different bifurcation modes are applied. The Ryzen pro 4750G is eaven worst regarding pcie lanesz it has already consumed 8x för the integrated GPU so your 16x slot only have 8-lanes on that motherboard. For that motherboard/cpu config to work you would have needed x4 x4 x8 or x4 x4 x4 x4 settings, your on the right track when you try to desxeibe the pcie lanes but you missed that your cpu only has 8lanes. The Ryzen 7. 3700x system has 16x lanes but you used the wrong setting. You should have used x8 x4 x4 settings for your settup. When you swapped you gpu to the lower slot you would have needed a x4 x4 x8 setting in the bios. Swap the gpu back to the upper slot and put the nvme card ind the lower slot and select x8 x4 x4 for it to work.

    Your graphics card uses a flow-thru fan/sink that is partially blocked by the Dell Precision shroud. It would likely perform better thermally if you cut out an inch or so off the bottom of the shroud to allow the graphics card an easier path to send heat in to the shroud’s flow.

    A couple of things I didn't get to in the video if anyone was curious: Noise was about 55dBA @ ~0.5m from the front of the chassis with the disks under full load (array consistency check). At idle it was 45dBA at the same measurement location. (Though one catch is that it was in a small and otherwise empty/echo-y closet, which probably made it measure louder than it would have been in some kind of proper acoustic chamber. Mainly I was concerned with relative measurements, so it served well for that.) It drew about 105W at idle without any HDDs, and ~235W at idle with all 18 HDDs installed. Under full disk load it was almost bang on 300W most of the time. To put the sound in perspective, the previous setup was about 66dbA. That was mostly due to the HP D2600 DAS that was perched on top of the old server. (I had spec'd the server itself to be super quiet. Didn't measure it independently, but it was much quieter than the Dell for sure.) But one important thing with sound levels: The D2600 fans ran faster and were of a much higher pitch and buzzier than those in the T640. So even with the disks working hard, the T640 "felt" far quieter than just that 11dB difference. It's more like a low "woosh", and not distracting or uncomfortable to be around... though of course that's fully down to personal preference/tolerance. I should be posting a follow-up soon, so you can see and hear what I mean. And here it is now: ruclips.net/video/Secv5P01k2M/видео.html

    (I am editing this as watching it) It’s really too bad There isn’t a raid 7 for software or hardware raid, i’m surprised that you didn’t use zfs or truenas core for z3 (there is a new os in development called hexos to make it far simpler to use truenas as I find it annoying to use) if you are using md raid it does support live replace so if the source drive is still functioning you can do a source and target for drive replacement it basically makes a raid6+raid1 mirror with the spare drive once miring is successful it removed the old drive (any uncorrectable read errors will be handled by the parity to correct them the rest of it is done as a straight mirror from the drive so all the other drives stay idle) zfs also has always supported live replace and is the recommended way if the old drive is still working When buying used dell make sure it has included idrac enterprise license (slightly annoying my 3 blade server I got extremely cheap only had basic so I lost remote access control after 90 days as it converts to basis after trial ends and the idrac key costs more then I paid for 3 dells) Also what I use for boot is pci-e 2x sata m.2 card that pull the power from the PCI bus and 2 sata cables from the card to plug into the motherboard sata ports (Most dell servers have at least two on board) use raid1 mirror boot Too bad we didn’t actually see the wait times because it looks like just from the front of the Dell machine drive lights (guessing 40% utilisation ) and It is running the rebuild on one thread because when it means 100 that’s 100% of one thread not every thread on the cpu (that will be like 800 assuming 8 threads available)
